Q & A

Q&A

Why should your photographs be produced by the Stark Studio?

The most important and relevant assistance a photographer can provide is accurate, understandable and comprehensive direction from behind the camera. There are three major ingredients that are crucial to a successful photograph. First, it must be striking, in order to command attention and separate it from the thousands of others. Second, it must be absolutely natural so the viewer is instantly drawn into the image, especially the eyes. Finally, the uniqueness of the individual must be undeniably detectable. During the session, our clients receive excellent, articulate, direction that will guide you to be where you need to be. Naturally there are many other considerations including twenty eight years working through various lighting alternatives and directing techniques (including the experience gained being first assistant to the world's most renowned portrait photographer, Irving Penn.)

What are the facts about “natural light” photography?

Is traditional studio lighting an option?

The character and quality of the light, as well as its natural appearance, are essential ingredients in creating an excellent photograph. Highly trained photographers (it takes years of training and experience to use all the possible options of natural light effectively) use both natural light and studio light. Natural light, in sufficient quantity, is undeniably superior (certainly there is nothing more natural and flattering). Natural light eliminates the continual, disconcerting, jarring blasts of studio lights into the talents face.
Our 2,400 sq. ft. daylight studio,(with 60 feet of large windows and our private 600 sq. ft outdoor balcony, with unobstructed East, South, and West light,) allows the opportunity to provide the exact quality of light for each, unique, individual we photograph, with plenty of space for with any photographic opportunity. Of course, this also helps create a beautiful, relaxed working atmosphere. (Photographs of the studio are in the site.)
Traditional studio lighting is certainly an option. We have been working with various types of studio lighting since the mid seventies. In more recent years, the movement has been towards naturalism and clients who prefer studio lighting usually do a partial natural light session as well.

How much time is allotted for a session?
Sessions are scheduled usually by the half-day, mornings or afternoons. We work in a calm, relaxed, enjoyable environment and never rush.

Do you shoot with digital or film?
We primarily shoot digital but film is always an option. As well, we can shoot both.

Can my photograph be produced in color and black and white?
Yes. Since we primarily shoot digital, any photograph can be produced in color or black and white.

Should my pictures be horizontal or vertical?
How should I be framed?

First of all, in all sessions we photograph both vertically and horizontally unless our client specifies one or the other. We often replace the 3/4 shot with a horizontal image for multiple reasons. While 3/4 allows you to determine the body type of the individual, the disadvantage is your head becomes so small that the impact of the eyes is greatly reduced. Often a horizontal image allows enough space to see enough body type while maintaining a close enough framing to create the necessary impact. Also, a horizontal image allows a sense of how one would appear on a movie or television screen. Furthermore, our eyes are naturally designed and conditioned to view things horizontally. Framing-the placement of your image on a page- is a matter of personal preference and varies with the style and nature of each individual. If you prefer to create as much impact as possible, we often crop into the top of your head. Either way, we usually alter the composition throughout the session.

Should I be concerned if this is my first session?
A considerable amount of our clients have little or no valuable experience in front of the camera. We clearly understand the importance of your pictures and provide an individual service in a relaxed environment. Your satisfaction with our services is vital, and we therefore always take the necessary time. You should be aware the less experience you have in front of the camera, the more dependent you are upon the skills and abilities of the photographer.

What should I wear?
Mr. Stark will consult with you personally, and make recommendations based on you individual requirements and objectives. However, as a basic parameter, considering from the waist up, primarily bring solids, medium to dark, some with texture and some interesting collars or necklines. If you are not sure, bring it.
